The comment from the twin cousins about how Ruby has lost three sisters, when she thinks she has only lost two. The way Ruby's mother generally avoids her and seems to dislike her: because Ruby's presence is a constant reminder of Pearl. When Ruby's mother is calling the names of her children she repeatedly stops herself after "Patricia, Gillian, Ruby, P." - she is stopping herself before she calls Pearl's name out of habit. When Ruby finds her mother's photos of all the sisters, and wonders why there is one photo each of Patricia and Gillian, but two of Ruby: one set of photos is actually Pearl. When Ruby is born, the midwife says "Snap!" which refers to them being identical twins.Ī baby is placed next to Ruby in the maternity ward and a nurse puts a label on the baby blanket - so they know which twin is which. In the womb, Ruby describes having an odd feeling "as if my shadow was stitched to my back, almost as if someone is in here with me" - pretty obvious hint in retrospect.
